The Mayor of Calgary has advocated for the return of photo radar enforcement, emphasizing its importance as a "life-saving tool" rather than a "cash grab." This comes following a series of alarming traffic incidents that occurred earlier in the week, including a fatal high-speed rollover, a 16-year-old boy being hit in a crosswalk and sustaining severe injuries, a paramedic being injured in a crash involving a stolen vehicle, and a skateboarder being struck by a cement truck.

The province of Alberta had previously announced the elimination of photo radar on all provincial highways and connectors except for school zones, playground zones, and construction zones starting from April 1, 2025. The Mayor, in her statement, highlighted that speed is the "leading cause" of such incidents and suggested that the absence of photo radar has led to an increase in dangerous driving behavior.

Gondek called on the province to reconsider its stance on the use of photo radar, which she believes would help in reducing traffic accidents and saving lives. The statement was released in response to the recent tragic events that have left the community concerned about road safety.

The article notes that CTV News has reached out to the Alberta government for comment on the Mayor's position but had not received a response at the time of publication. The Mayor's full statement can be found on her official website.
