In Cairo, the Governor-General and Mr. Beckett SC were welcomed by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to Al-Ittihadiya Palace.

This year marks 75 years of diplomatic relations between our two countries—a milestone to celebrate. Together, the Governor-General and President discussed our historic ties, enduring friendship, cultural exchange, economic connections, and the vibrant Egyptian diaspora in Australia.

The Governor-General congratulated the President on the completion and upcoming official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, the largest museum in the world, which will no doubt attract many Australian visitors.

The Governor-General expressed her appreciation for the very warm welcome, the honour guard, and the beautiful renditions of the national anthems.

During the meeting, the Governor-General and President el-Sisi also explored opportunities for further collaboration in areas such as education, science, and innovation. They acknowledged the importance of strengthening people-to-people links, particularly through student exchange programs and research collaborations. The Governor-General highlighted Australia's commitment to supporting Egypt's development goals, particularly in the areas of economic reform, human development, and women's empowerment.

The President and the Governor-General also discussed regional and global issues of mutual concern, including the need for continued cooperation on counter-terrorism, peace and security, and sustainable development. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Middle East and beyond.

Following the meeting, the Governor-General and Mr. Beckett SC were treated to a majestic tour of the palace, showcasing the rich history and cultural heritage of Egypt. They were also hosted to a lavish banquet, where they engaged in lively conversations with Egyptian dignitaries and enjoyed traditional Egyptian cuisine.
