Emergency services were alerted to the incident on John Street, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, shortly before 8:00 PM BST on Saturday. Upon their arrival, they discovered the body of a man in his 50s amidst the wreckage. Police from Nottinghamshire confirmed that while emergency personnel attempted to revive the man, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The explosion has been designated as a major incident by emergency responders, and authorities stated that all individuals who may have been nearby during the event have been accounted for. According to Julie Leigh, leader of Bassetlaw District Council, a total of 35 properties were evacuated, leaving 48 residents in need of temporary housing. The council arranged accommodations at the nearby Crown Place Community Centre, while others found shelter with family and friends. Chief Inspector Clive Collings remarked, "This is an extremely serious incident that has resulted in a man's untimely death. His family has been notified and is receiving support from specially trained officers. It's undoubtedly a shocking event for the Worksop community." Witnesses reported that emergency services arrived rapidly after the explosion. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service deployed specialized urban search and rescue teams to the area following the blast, with demolition crews, including a cherry picker, arriving after noon on Sunday.

Local residents described a scene of "chaos," recounting the loud crash that drove many to rush outside. Thick black smoke filled the street as several individuals ran toward the damaged house in an attempt to offer assistance. Collins added, "It is anticipated that the cordon and road closures will remain for an extended period as we conduct our investigations.

Officers will be present in the area to address any inquiries or concerns from the public.
