Former Michigan Congressman Pete Hoekstra has received confirmation from the U.S. Senate to serve as the new United States ambassador to Canada.

He will assume the role of America's chief diplomat in Ottawa during a challenging period for U.S.-Canada relations, marked by President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs on automobiles, steel, and aluminum, as well as the ongoing potential for broad economic duties related to fentanyl.

While Trump has suggested that Canada should consider becoming a U.S. state, Hoekstra emphasized during his confirmation hearing that Canada is an independent nation.

In a statement released today, Hoekstra highlighted that Canada is America's most significant trading partner, the largest source of foreign investment, and the primary supplier of energy imports.

He expressed his commitment to collaborating with the Canadian government to enhance the trading relationship, secure borders, address the fentanyl threat, and work together on national security matters.

Hoekstra previously held the position of ambassador to the Netherlands during the first Trump administration.
