In response to a report indicating that Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar's agency had been investigating far-right infiltration within the police for several months, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday accused Israel's internal security chief of probing National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir without his approval.

"The assertion that I authorized Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar to collect evidence against Minister Ben Gvir is yet another blatant falsehood," Netanyahu stated in a release from his office.

This statement followed revelations that Bar's agency had been examining connections between far-right elements within the police and Ben Gvir.

"The document that has been made public, which includes a clear directive from the Shin Bet chief to gather evidence against political figures, is reminiscent of oppressive regimes, undermines democratic principles, and seeks to destabilize a right-wing government," the statement continued.

Ben Gvir responded on X, labeling Bar a "criminal" and a "liar" who is "attempting to deny his conspiracy against elected officials in a democratic nation, even after the documents have been revealed to the public and the world."

On Friday, Israel's supreme court temporarily halted the government's unprecedented decision to dismiss Bar, a move that has intensified political rifts within the country. This decision came shortly after the government, one of the most right-leaning in Israel's history, supported Netanyahu's proposal to remove Bar, with the prime minister expressing a loss of confidence in him.
