In a stunning operation that highlights the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking in Nigeria, operatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have apprehended a 42-year-old Indian woman, Ms. Neetu Neetu, at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA).

She was found in possession of an astonishing 72 parcels of heroin, cleverly disguised in wafer wraps and packaged to resemble chocolates. According to a statement released by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi on Sunday, this illicit shipment, weighing a total of 11 kilograms, was discovered during a thorough search based on intelligence gathering.

Ms. Neetu, who arrived on Qatar Airways flight QR1431 from Bangkok, Thailand, via Vietnam and Doha, was detained in the airport's arrival hall on Friday, March 14, 2025. Reacting to this high-profile arrest, NDLEA Chairman and CEO Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) noted that drug syndicates are increasingly employing foreign nationals, including women, to smuggle narcotics into Nigeria.

"This seizure demonstrates the desperation of traffickers who will go to extreme lengths to mask their activities. However, our vigilant operatives, equipped with modern technology and intelligence, continue to foil these dangerous plots," Marwa stated. In addition to the shocking heroin case at MAKIA, NDLEA's recent operations have led to significant drug seizures nationwide. In a separate incident in Kano on Thursday, March 20, authorities apprehended a 45-year-old suspect, Michael Ogundele, who was found transporting a 50-litre steel gas cylinder packed with an astonishing 50,000 tramadol pills (225mg). He was arrested at Gadar Tamburawa along the Zaria-Kano road following a coordinated intelligence operation that required officers to use welding tools to cut open the cylinder and extract the concealed drugs. Furthermore, another suspect, Sunday Ogar, 40, was arrested in Kano's Gunduwawa area on Wednesday, March 19, with 27 kilograms of skunk, a powerful strain of cannabis. In another breakthrough, 40-year-old female suspect Khadijah Abdullahi was caught on Tuesday, March 18, with an incredible 424 bottles of codeine-based syrup in the Lungun Bulala Yalwa area of Kano. In Lagos, the fight against drug cartels escalated dramatically as NDLEA operatives conducted raids in the Mushin area, leading to the arrest of Olumuyiwa Kolawole and Samod Adisa, who were found with 67.5 kilograms of skunk. In a related operation, 100.8 kilograms of the same psychoactive substance were confiscated from the store of two fleeing dealers in Anifowoshe, Mushin. Additionally, a suspect named Isah Idris was arrested in Apapa on Tuesday, March 18, while carrying 4.5 kilograms of skunk, 600 grams of tramadol (225mg), and 30 litres of codeine syrup. The crackdown in Lagos also resulted in the arrest of Yahaya Mohamed in the Ikotun area, where various amounts of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine were seized.

Commending NDLEA officers for their unwavering dedication to tackling drug syndicates, Marwa praised their balanced strategy of reducing drug supply while educating communities about the dangers of drug abuse. "We are not only confronting traffickers but also ensuring that our youth and communities understand the risks of drug use. This is a battle we must win," he affirmed.
