Sources confirm that Canadians will cast their votes on Monday, April 28, according to CTV News. Additionally, CTV News has learned that Prime Minister Mark Carney will contest the election in the Ottawa riding of Nepean. The Liberal Party officially announced Carney's candidacy for Nepean in a post on X late Saturday.

"Ottawa is where @MarkJCarney raised his family, dedicated his life to public service, and consistently contributed to his community," the post states. The nomination for Nepean opened this week after the Liberal Party abruptly revoked the candidacy of MP Chandra Arya due to a review prompted by "new information" received by the Liberals' Green Light Committee. On Sunday, Prime Minister Mark Carney will request Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament, initiating a snap election.

CTV News reported earlier this week that election day could be as early as April 28. According to Elections Canada, the federal election period must last a minimum of 37 days and a maximum of 51 days. Both the day the election is called and election day are included in this period. This schedule indicates that Carney has chosen the shortest campaign period permitted under Canadian law. The last federal election, held in the summer of 2021, also lasted 37 days. As a result, advance polls will occur over the Easter weekend. Parliament has been prorogued for more than two months following the resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on January 6, and was slated to return on Monday.
Carney was elected as Trudeau's successor on March 9 after a relatively brief leadership contest. By calling an election on Sunday, Carney can avoid presenting a throne speech or facing confidence votes that could potentially topple the Liberal minority government. Notably, Carney currently does not hold a seat in the House of Commons.
