The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) has transferred $578,000 in confiscated cash to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after a passenger made a false declaration upon arrival, officials reported on Friday. The individual, a male traveler coming from Johannesburg on South African Airways Flight SA60, initially declared only $279,000 at the airport's currency declaration desk. However, during a routine check, customs officials uncovered an additional $299,000 hidden in various packages, bringing the total amount to $578,000. Additionally, authorities discovered €100 and a counterfeit $250 note among the undeclared funds. Effiong Harrison, the Comptroller of the MMIA Command, who facilitated the handover to the EFCC, noted that the suspect's actions breach the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act of 2011, which requires travelers to declare any amount exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent in foreign currency to customs officials.
