Nigerian university sacks vice-chancellor 
   No reason   was  given for the   sacking  of the former acting vice-chancellor.

   The Governing Council of  Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has sacked the   institution's  acting  vice-chancellor,  Joseph Ikechebelu.
 
   Mr.  Ikechebelu, a professor and  former deputy vice-chancellor (administration) of the institution, was appointed acting vice-chancellor in early   June,  replacing  Charles Esimone, a professor whose   term  expired on   June  3.
 
 
   The  Governing Council   of  the  university  announced the   sacking  of the acting vice-chancellor in a letter made available to   journalists  on Saturday.
 
   The  reason  for the   sacking  of the former acting   vice-chancellor  has  not  been  made  clear.
 
 
   The   letter  obtained by PREMIUM   TIMES  was signed by the   Pro-Chancellor  and   President  of the   Council,  Gregory Mbadiwe.|
 
   Dangote Refinery 
   Mr   Mbadiwe  also  announced  in the   letter  the appointment of Carol Arinze-Umobi, a  professor, as   the  new acting   Vice-Chancellor  of the institution.
 
   The  appointment   of  Ms  Arinze-Umobi  will take effect from Monday,  July   22,  2024, the letter said.
 
   The   Council  Chairman  said the appointment, which is for six months,   was  in   line  with the provisions of Section   4  of the First Schedule, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, LFN 2004 as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended)   Act,  2007.
 
   "The terms and conditions of your appointment are   those  approved by the   Federal  Government  for all   Federal  Universities,"  reads  part of the   letter  addressed to Mrs   Arinze-Umobi.
 
 
 
   "We have full confidence in your ability to lead our esteemed institution during this period and wish you   every  success,"   reads  the   letter.
 
   Mr Mbadiwe noted that a copy of the appointment letter   had  been   sent  to the country's Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, who will then   report  to  President Bola Tinubu.
 
 
 
   Some university students   had  been   fearful  of  the presence of the   military.
