Today marks a significant change — after years of toll payments, drivers will no longer need to present a MacPass or toss coins into a basket when crossing the harbour bridges. For the past 70 years, tolls have been collected for crossing the Halifax Harbour bridges, but that practice came to an end this morning. Construction has begun to dismantle the toll plazas on the bridges. The Macdonald Bridge was closed this weekend and will close again next weekend to continue this work. The bridge commission has announced that there will be three additional weekend closures of the MacKay Bridge to support the removal of the toll plaza. Additionally, the Princess Margaret Boulevard on-ramp will be closed for six weeks starting today. However, drivers will continue to have access to the exit from Highway 111. The impact of these changes on traffic patterns remains uncertain. Steven Proctor from Halifax Harbour Bridges has stated that they will be monitoring the situation closely and encourages drivers to remain vigilant as the transition takes place.
