A suspected of engaging with women on online dating platforms

In the interest of public safety, the CPS is alerting the community about an individual who is suspected of engaging with women on online dating platforms under a false identity, gaining their trust, and subsequently committing sexual assault.

In February 2024, a victim began communicating with a man who presented himself as 'Alex' on an online dating app. After exchanging several messages, they arranged to meet in person about a week later at a local coffee shop.

The following day, Alex requested to spend additional time with the victim, asking to visit her home. The victim consented, but upon his arrival, Alex proceeded to sexually assault her. He left the residence shortly thereafter, and the victim promptly reported the incident to the police.

Following the assault, Alex swiftly deleted his dating profile and blocked access to his cellphone information.

Our Sexual Assault Investigative Unit initiated an inquiry, which revealed that the suspect had created a dating profile using the fictitious name of Alex and had communicated with the victim under this alias.

As the investigation advanced, our detectives successfully identified the suspect, who is believed to utilize multiple dating apps, employing various false names and profiles to target victims.

The individual has been identified as Ali KIANI, a 43-year-old resident of Calgary. He is approximately 6 feet tall, weighs around 195 pounds, and has a medium build.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) is issuing this alert after thorough consideration of various factors, including privacy issues, as it believes that informing the community about KIANI's behavior serves the public interest.

The public is urged to understand that the purpose of this notification is to allow individuals to take appropriate safety precautions and to refrain from any form of vigilante behavior.
