Alberta RCMP say two guns and 600 rounds of ammunition were among the items seized after a suspicious vehicle was stopped while leaving Nanton last month.

Mounties responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle travelling east on Highway 533 on Feb. 18.

After stopping the vehicle, RCMP determined the driver – who was known to police – was not permitted to drive a car, and was in a vehicle that wasn't registered or insured.

As the officer approached the vehicle, "a firearm was observed in plain view," RCMP said in a Monday news release.

A search of the driver and the vehicle led to the seizure of the following:

More than 18 grams of methamphetamine;
A .22 caliber rifle;
A Winchester 11;
A large quantity of stripped copper wire;
A restricted empty rifle magazine; and
approximately 600 rounds of ammunition.
RCMP say some of the items recovered have been linked to a break-and-enter in the Claresholm area.

A 28-year-old Claresholm man is now charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, among other offences.

He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on March 26.

The town of Nanton is located roughly 65 kilometres south of Calgary.
