At the Canada-U.S. border, motorists entering Canada are required to stop at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) inspection booths, as seen at the Windsor-Detroit tunnel on Thursday, March 6, 2025.

Recent trends indicate that Canadians are increasingly forgoing road trips to the U.S. in response to President Donald Trump's assertions regarding sovereignty and economic pressures on Canada.

According to Statistics Canada, the number of return trips by Canadian residents traveling by car from the U.S. experienced a 23% decline in February compared to the previous year, marking the second consecutive month of year-over-year decreases. This decline in January and February represents the first two instances of such a trend since March 2021.

The reduction in travel to the U.S. coincides with a growing sentiment among Canadians to boycott American vacations and products, particularly following Trump's threats to utilize "economic force" to annex Canada and impose severe tariffs.

In addition, the weak Canadian dollar may have influenced Canadians to stay home, as it increases the cost of travel to the U.S. Adverse weather conditions, including snowstorms affecting parts of eastern and central Canada, have also impacted driving conditions.

The United States remains the most favored destination for international travel among Canadians, with Canada consistently experiencing a services trade deficit with the U.S., primarily due to travel services. Furthermore, the data indicates a 2.4% decrease in the number of return trips by air for Canadian residents compared to the same month last year.
