Lesson to all Canadian leaders

Donald Trump aims to undermine our economy, compelling us to yield to his demands and threats against our sovereignty. This moment calls for resolute leadership from Canadian political figures, rather than a display of weakness.

The anticipated implementation of 50 percent tariffs on steel today introduces further turmoil that threatens jobs in Saskatchewan and increases the cost of goods.

It is imperative for leaders at all levels to unite in safeguarding our steel industry. Last month, I urged the provincial government to prioritize the use of locally produced steel to create additional jobs and to prohibit U.S. companies from securing steel contracts within our province. We made these requests with the understanding that Donald Trump would likely target this sector in the near future, yet we received no response from the Saskatchewan Party.

While other Canadian Premiers have stepped up to confront the challenges posed by Trump, the Saskatchewan Party government has been notably absent during this unprecedented economic crisis. Media commentators have referred to the Premier as "Slow Moe" at a time when the citizens of this province require decisive action.

Once again, the Saskatchewan NDP calls for an emergency session. We will not convene in the Legislature for another week, and it is uncertain what damage Donald Trump may inflict by then. We must engage in discussions and formulate a comprehensive strategy to counter these assaults on our economy, facilitate the construction of a pipeline to the East Coast, and prepare for the future.
