It was reported yesterday that U.S. President Donald Trump has suspended his proposed tariffs on Canadian goods until the implementation of the so-called "reciprocal tariffs," which are set to take effect on April 2nd for imports into the United States from all countries. Additionally, the President has indicated the possibility of imposing further tariffs on other Canadian products.

The executive order issued by the President yesterday, which mandates this suspension, lacks clarity regarding the specific goods it encompasses and the legal criteria that must be met for qualification.

Consequently, the Government of Alberta will proceed with our tariff response until these uncertainties are resolved and the ongoing threats and unilateral tariff impositions, which contravene the CUSMA, cease.

The frequent fluctuations in U.S. tariffs are generating significant investment uncertainty and market instability throughout North America, leading to confusion among both Canadians and Americans.

With a Canadian federal election anticipated in the coming weeks, we urge the United States to adhere to the terms of the CUSMA during this electoral period and to initiate negotiations promptly thereafter with the individual who becomes Canada's new Prime Minister.

Such actions would not only demonstrate respect for the democratic process of a longstanding military ally and trading partner but would also help stabilize markets, reduce tensions, and reflect a genuine commitment to uphold the agreement negotiated by this President during his first term, while a new agreement addressing existing trade issues is developed between our nations.
