The UK has achieved a record low death rate, according to recent analysis. The Continuous Mortality Investigation (CMI) reported that the death rate in 2024 was nearly 4% lower than in 2023 and slightly below the previous record low seen in 2019. This improvement reflects better health outcomes, particularly among older age groups.

The registered death rate in the UK steadily halved from 1974 to 2011, largely driven by advancements in tackling heart disease, smoking prevention, and medical innovations. However, from 2011 to 2019, the rate of improvement slowed significantly, and the COVID-19 pandemic caused a temporary increase in deaths. The new figure for 2024 indicates a return to pre-pandemic levels and a continuation of the long-term trend of gradual improvement.

Despite the overall positive trend, there are concerns about rising death rates among younger working-age individuals. The UK government has emphasized a shift in focus from treating sickness to preventing it, aiming to further improve public health outcomes.

The record low death rate in 2024 is a significant milestone, highlighting the progress made in healthcare and the importance of continued efforts to address health disparities across different age groups.
