 A Calgary police officer is facing an aggravated assault charge related to the discharge of his firearm while making an arrest. In a Thursday news release, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said the findings of its investigation were forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, which determined "the evidence did meet their standard for prosecution." Article content On Wednesday,  who's been with CPS for 10 years, was charged with aggravated assault as well as careless use of a firearm.

 No other details on the incident were provided by ASIRT or CPS, though the latter also issued a statement. A"Any time an officer discharges their firearm in an incident such as the one outlined (by ASIRT), the public expects a thorough, independent investigation," said CPS. "The charged officer is afforded the right to a fair trial, the same as any member of the public." In light of the charges, Huggins' duty status is being reviewed, added CPS. Huggins is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on March 21.
