First Senate Democrat Calls For Biden To Drop Out

Senator  Peter Welch,  Democrat  of  Vermont ,  called  on  President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race in a Washington Post  editorial  on  Wednesday, making Welch the  first Democrat  in  the  Senate  to  make the request  publicly,  as the president rejects calls  from  his  Democratic  critics and  allies  to  withdraw  after  a  difficult  debate  in June.

•   Welch's  editorial  began  by  praising  Biden, calling him  "a  man of  rare  decency,"  before  briefly  expressing  concern  about the  president's  chances against former President Donald  Trump  and  citing  Biden's  "disastrous  debate  performance."

 
  Welch said Vermont loves the president, but  "ordinary  Vermonters are worried  he  can't  win this  time  and  are  afraid  of another Trump  presidency."  "
