On Thursday,  January 9, 2025, when investigators attempted  to conduct a traffic stop  following a  vehicle theft, both occupants  left the scene and  traveled to the Martindale area, where they attempted to flee on  foot.
Police say due to the  dangerous nature of the  suspects, multiple means were used to apprehend them, including the HAWCS helicopter, patrol  cars and canine  units.
Officers also seized a  double-barreled sawed-off shotgun  and ammunition, a knife, a  folding bat, a bulletproof vest, a spiked baseball bat, a small amount of crystal  methamphetamine and  cocaine, and recovered a stolen  BMW. A 39-year-old Calgary man faces a total of 24  charges related to firearms, weapons, stolen property, drugs and other  charges, while a 40-year-old Calgary woman faces four charges related to drugs, weapons and breach of  court. . The third police  operation, on  January 15,  2025, occurred when the  Vehicle Theft Enforcement Team found a stolen vehicle in the  Canyon Meadows community, on the city's southwest  side.
Three suspects were taken into custody with the  assistance of the CPS canine  unit.
Arresting officers seized a loaded  .32-caliber revolver, a loaded  .22-caliber semi-automatic  pistol, $22,000 worth of  drugs, including crystal  methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, MDMA and  ketamine, and a stolen 2014 Kia  Rio. As a result of  this operation, two men and a woman, all from Calgary, face a total of 55 charges related to firearms, drugs, stolen vehicles, traffic  enforcement and  failure to comply with a court  order.

While police  do not believe any of the incidents are  linked, CPS  Senior Sergeant Kerry Smith said  "the number of firearms our auto theft  squad has seized so far this year is  extremely concerning."

"Citizens who travel in stolen vehicles already pose a significant risk to public safety, and the presence of these weapons only increases that  risk," Smith added.
CPS reports that in 2024, the auto theft  squad arrested 155 offenders, laid 949 Criminal Code charges, seized nine firearms  and $139,000 in  drugs, and returned 181 stolen vehicles to their rightful owners.
