The Royal Canadian Navy says a sailor has died in the Bedford Basin after a boat  capsized.
The Navy  said two sailors were operating a  rigid-hulled inflatable boat in the Halifax-area bay when it  capsized and capsized around 10  p.m.
The navy said a rescue  operation led by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre  in Halifax dispatched two Canadian Coast  Guard vessels and pulled  the two sailors from the  water.
The navy said the sailors were  treated by paramedics and  taken to a  hospital in Halifax, but one of the sailors could not be  revived.
The second sailor was treated and released from the hospital,  while military police are investigating the  incident. Commodore Jacob French, commander of  Canada's Atlantic Fleet, said the  Navy was "deeply saddened" by the  loss and  that the  sailors' dedication and service to country will be remembered and  honoured. In a statement shared  on social media, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston called the  sailor's death  "devastating news" and  said his thoughts  were with the  sailor's family, friends and  colleagues.
