On this day in 1998, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (GCFR), popularly known as M.| K.| O.|   Abiola  died  unexpectedly on the day   of  his  release.|  His death   came  29 days after the   death  of General Sani Abacha, the military leader who had imprisoned M.| K.| O.| Abiola.|

While meeting   with  a group of American diplomats including Thomas Pickering and Susan Rice at a government   guest  house  in Abuja, Abiola,  the winner of the  Nigerian presidential   election  of  12  June  1993,  collapsed and died.| The election results were annulled by   the  then military   president,  General Ibrahim Babangida.|

Rice had served   Abiola  tea  shortly before   her  collapse  and despite evidence to the   contrary,  many believe  she  poisoned Abiola.| However, an independent autopsy   conducted  and witnessed by   doctors  and pathologists from the Nigerian government,   the  Nigerian Medical Association, Canada,   the  United  Kingdom  and the   United  States  found   significant  evidence of   long-standing  heart   disease.
