By 2050, China will have 40% fewer young  people than  today.
Japan's population will be smaller than  it was in 1960.
Even  regions with traditionally  high birth rates have fallen below replacement  levels. The real shock  is not the  reduction in numbers, but the way it restructures society.
Cities with empty  houses, armies struggling to find recruits, and economies forced to adapt to a world where the elderly outnumber  the young.
Most disturbing?
Unlike the  population decline caused by the Black  Death 700 years ago, we don't know how this decline  will end.
