Nigeria, along with India and Zimbabwe, is one of the leading countries benefiting from the UK's "Health and Care" visa program. This visa was introduced to address significant staff shortages in the UK's health and social care sectors, exacerbated by Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, more than 18,000 Nigerian care workers moved to the UK under this program, representing a substantial portion of the growing number of foreign workers filling these roles.

The trend is largely driven by economic difficulties in these countries, with high unemployment rates pushing workers, especially from Nigeria and Ghana, to seek better-paying opportunities abroad. In 2023 alone, 21,000 Nigerian nationals received care worker visas, a dramatic rise from previous years. However, the UK government has also suspended active recruitment from countries like Nigeria, which face critical healthcare worker shortages, unless there is a direct government-to-government agreement.
