In his last meeting with US President Joe Biden, Chinese leader Xi Jinping promised to cooperate with incoming President Donald Trump.

The two recognized "ups and downs" in their relationship during Biden's four years in government when they met on Saturday in Peru on the fringes of the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) conference.

However, both emphasized how tensions have decreased on matters like trade and Taiwan.

When Trump takes office in two months, many predict that tensions between the US and China may increase due to his pledge to increase tariffs on Chinese imports.
The president-elect has promised to impose 60% taxes on all Chinese imports. Prominent China hawks have also been appointed to important defence and foreign posts by him.

Trump called China a "strategic competitor" during his first term in office. When the prior president called COVID a "Chinese virus" during the pandemic, relations deteriorated.

At the meeting, which took place at his hotel in Lima on Saturday, the Chinese president stated that Beijing would continue to pursue a stable relationship with Washington.

"China is ready to work with the new US administration to maintain communication, expand cooperation and manage differences," added Xi.

According to Biden, the two superpowers' strategic rivalry shouldn't turn into a conflict.

"Neither of our two nations can allow this rivalry to turn into hostilities. That is our duty and I believe we've demonstrated that this connection is feasible over the past four years," he said.
