Abuja — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was received by President Bola Tinubu on Sunday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

President Tinubu welcomed Modi, who had landed in Abuja on Saturday night, in the State House's Forecourt at around 10:20 a.m.

A Guard of Honour, mounted by the Brigade of Guards, sang the Nigerian Anthem and escorted the visiting leader through the inspection of the mounted procession after the Indian leader was greeted by the Indian Anthem upon arrival.

The Guard of Honour's mounted inspection was followed by a 21-gun salute.

Both leaders are anticipated to engage in a variety of bilateral activities when they are together, such as a limited meeting, a few discussions at the delegation level, and the sharing of memoranda of agreement (MoU).

During the visit, both leaders would aim to improve Nigerian-Indian relations, according to a statement released on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

During their bilateral talks, President Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi will aim to further deepen the relationship between Nigeria and India.

"To improve cooperation in vital areas, both leaders will exchange signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs)," Onanuga stated.

Since Dr. Manmohan Singh's state visit in 2007, when the two countries formed a strategic relationship, Modi's visit to Nigeria will be the first by an Indian prime leader.
