Around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, two boats crashed in the Buck Bay section of Bobs Lake, about 140 kilometres southwest of Ottawa. At the scene of the collision, Juliette Côté, 22, Riley Orr, 23, and Kaila Bearman, 21, were all declared deceased.

The collision between a speed boat and an open-bow fishing boat injured five individuals.
Matthew Splinter, 44, was charged with three counts of impaired operation causing death, three counts of impaired operation causing bodily harm, three counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death, and three counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm, according to a statement released by the Ontario Provincial Police on Wednesday.

Splinter was taken into custody on Tuesday, according to the police, and is scheduled to appear in Kingston on Wednesday for a bail hearing.

OPP Det. Insp. Marty McConnell responded, "Death investigations are very complex, they require a great deal of resources and, you can imagine, tragically, three lives were lost that day and serious injuries," when asked why it took five months for the
OPP to bring charges against a person related to the collision.

"With the resources involved in this, I wanted to ensure that a fulsome and fair investigation was brought forward to the courts."

Given that all of the material is currently in the courts, McConnell stated that investigators are unable to comment on what transpired on the lake at the time of the collision.

After the incident, paramedics, police, and firefighters rushed to the scene as dispatchers determined where rescue boats could be launched, according to recordings of emergency dispatches that were posted online. When police arrived, a local neighbour loaned them his boat launch.

Near a concrete dock, first responders discovered the majority of collision victims trapped together on the boats.

"I would like to thank all of those who played a role in this complex investigation," McConnell stated.

"I also want to use this chance to express my gratitude to the people of the Bobs Lake region; a large number of cottagers and locals rushed to help the casualties following the collision and provided support thereafter."
