The Federal government spent tens of millions on the Inquiry into Foreign

The federal government passed Bill C-70 and spent tens of millions on the Inquiry into Foreign Interference. However, they never bothered to form a task group to guarantee that there was no foreign meddling in the BC election.

Rather, two weeks prior to the election, the RCMP said that they were unable to prevent meddling and that criminal charges were no longer their preferred method.

To put it another way, they gave up before the conflict had started.
