A single-vehicle incident on the off-ramp from Stoney Trail to Macleod Trail S.E. has resulted in the deaths of seventeen cattle.

On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at about 8:10 p.m., we received a call to the intersection of Stoney Trail S.E. and MacLeod Trail S.E. regarding a semi-truck that was transporting about 95 cattle that had flipped over.

According to investigators, the semi-truck was driving from eastbound Stoney Trail S.E. to southbound Macleod Trail S.E. on the off-ramp when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to an unnegotiated bend.

After rolling over, the semi-truck stopped on the left side of the road.

Due to minor injuries, the driver was sent to the hospital.

The CPS collaborated with a number of partners, such as highway road crew personnel, firefighters, the @RCMPAlberta,
The livestock were rescued from the semi-trailer by a veterinarian and cattle wranglers.

Three calves broke out of the trailer during the rescue and started to hoof it in the direction of the south end of the Macleod Trail & Stoney Trail intersection, endangering public safety. To capture the runaway cattle and stop any injury to the public or the animals, a team of CPS police, cattle rustlers, and highway road work members set off on an operation that lasted almost two hours.

Unfortunately, the incident resulted in the deaths of 17 cattle. No more casualties or property damage happened, and the remaining sheep were successfully saved.

One aspect of the accident that is being looked into is speed. Drugs and alcohol are not currently regarded as contributing factors.

The inquiry is still underway, and anyone with dashcam footage or information is welcome to participate footage related to this incident is asked to contact police.
