Summary: Hurricane Milton, which has been upgraded to a category five hurricane, is expected to make landfall in Florida tomorrow night. Residents there are preparing for its arrival.

The 73-year-old Tampa dentist Steve Crist tells our correspondent that locals should brace for "a lot of damage" and adds, "All we can do is hope."

The National Hurricane Centre reports that Milton's maximum sustained wind speed is 165 mph (270 km/h), while its strength is expected to vary before it reaches the US state.

Earlier, Vice President Joe Biden issued an evacuation order for anybody in Milton's route, citing it as a "life and death" situation.

It occurs fewer than two weeks after category four Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Gulf Coast storm—it claimed the lives of at least 225 people in North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
