The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have agreed to strengthen their partnership in the fight against corruption.

This decision was made on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, during a courtesy visit by Barrister Sulyman Kosemani, chairman of the Ilorin Branch of the NBA, along with other executive members, to the Ilorin Zonal Director of the EFCC, Daniel Isei.

Kosemani acknowledged the existing collaboration between the EFCC and legal practitioners in Kwara State, but emphasized the importance of deeper cooperation. He urged the Commission to increase its focus on politically exposed persons, especially public officials, to promote accountability in the management of state funds, particularly in light of increased monthly financial allocations to the state following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

Additionally, the NBA chairman advocated for greater participation of lawyers in EFCC activities, suggesting that such collaboration would enhance productivity.

In response, Isei expressed appreciation for the visit, describing lawyers as essential partners in the anti-corruption effort. He remarked, "Lawyers and law enforcement agents cannot do without each other. We can achieve more together through synergy."

However, he also cautioned lawyers against interfering in the Commission's investigations and encouraged them to provide credible intelligence, especially in high-profile cases. He reminded legal practitioners of their responsibilities as advocates for justice, advising them to offer sound counsel to their clients and avoid submitting frivolous applications intended to delay trials.

"We welcome collaboration with lawyers and other stakeholders. We are committed to maintaining professionalism and integrity in our work," he stated.
