Eight species of medium-to-large deciduous trees in the genus Adansonia are referred to as "adansonias" or baobabs (/ˈbaʊbaeb/ or /ˈbeɪoʊbæb/). They belong to the Bombacoideae subfamily of the Malvaceae family. They are indigenous to Australia, Madagascar, and continental Africa. Additionally, the trees have been introduced to other continents, including Asia. Based on an ecological and genomic research, it appears that the genus originated on Madagascar and Africa.
