Empowering African Women in Quantum Science: UNESCO Launches Open Learning and Mentorship Programme

As quantum science and technologies continue to transform the world, it is imperative to address the underrepresentation of women, particularly from the Global South, in this critical field. In response, UNESCO is proud to announce the launch of its Open Learning and Mentorship Programme for African Women in Quantum Science 2025.

This comprehensive programme aims to provide a unique opportunity for female PhD students in STEM fields from Africa to develop their skills and knowledge in quantum computing. Through a structured online course and personalized mentorship, participants will gain a deep understanding of the fundamentals of quantum computing and its applications.

Open-Access Course and Dedicated Mentorship

The programme features an open-access introductory course on quantum computing, based on the open-source textbook Learn Quantum Computation using Qiskit. This course is freely accessible to all learners, enabling a broad reach and inclusivity. In addition, up to 50 outstanding female PhD students will be selected for a dedicated mentorship track, offering personalized support and guidance from international experts.

Eligibility and Application

To be eligible, applicants must be female PhD students from Africa in STEM fields, with a strong foundation in linear algebra. A competitive selection process will be based on CV and motivation letter submissions. The application deadline is August 31, 2025, and selected participants will be announced in mid-September 2025. Live training is scheduled to begin in late September 2025.

Join the Quantum Revolution

This pioneering programme presents a unique opportunity for African women in STEM to excel in quantum science and contribute to the development of innovative technologies. UNESCO invites eligible candidates to apply and be part of this transformative journey.
