Saskatchewan's Economic Resilience in the Face of Uncertainty

The recent decision by the Trump administration to increase tariffs on non-CUSMA compliant Canadian goods to 35% is a setback for Saskatchewan's economy, but it's crucial to acknowledge that Canada's efforts to maintain the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) will safeguard 95% of our exports to the US from tariffs. This is a significant victory, particularly in today's tumultuous trade landscape, where the US has imposed across-the-board tariffs on many countries.

While the tariffs on Canadian steel, copper, and forestry exports are damaging, the fact that the majority of our exports remain tariff-free gives us a competitive edge over other countries facing similar tariffs. Saskatchewan's economic growth continues to be robust, with the highest rate of job creation and the lowest unemployment rate in Canada.

Our government will persist in engaging with US businesses and lawmakers to improve our trade relationship, while concurrently exploring new export markets among the 160 countries that purchase Saskatchewan products. We have consistently maintained that the Trump tariffs would harm the US economy, and recent job growth figures bear this out, with significant slowdowns in May, June, and July due to the uncertainty and higher costs caused by these policies.

Rather than retaliating, Canada should focus on bolstering its own economy. Saskatchewan is urging the federal government to adopt our "Strong Saskatchewan, Strong Canada Plan," which would fast-track essential economic infrastructure projects like pipelines and rail lines and eliminate counterproductive regulations, such as the Oil and Gas Emissions Cap and the Clean Electricity Standard. By removing barriers to growth, we can take control of our economic destiny and ensure a brighter future for Saskatchewan and Canada alike.
