In John 8, we find Jesus teaching in the temple courts, where a crowd has gathered around him. Suddenly, the teachers of the law and the Pharisees bring in a woman caught in adultery, demanding that Jesus condemn her to stoning according to the Law of Moses. However, Jesus cleverly turns the tables by saying, "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." One by one, the accusers slip away, leaving Jesus alone with the woman. In an act of mercy, Jesus declares, "Neither do I condemn you... Go now and leave your life of sin."

This encounter sets the stage for a series of disputes between Jesus and the Pharisees, who question his authority and testimony. Jesus responds by asserting his divine origin, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." He also claims that his testimony is valid, as he stands with the Father who sent him.

The Pharisees press on, asking Jesus about his father and his origins. Jesus responds by saying that he is from above, while they are from below. He warns them that they will die in their sins if they do not believe that he is the one he claims to be.

In a subsequent exchange, Jesus tells the Jews who believe in him that they must hold to his teaching to know the truth and be set free. However, they protest, claiming to be Abraham's descendants and never having been slaves to anyone. Jesus responds by saying that everyone who sins is a slave to sin, and that he, the Son, can set them free.

The disputes culminate in Jesus' bold claim, "Before Abraham was born, I am!" This declaration of his eternal existence sparks outrage among his opponents, who attempt to stone him. However, Jesus slips away, leaving them to ponder the significance of his words.
