Joint Statement from Saskatchewan NDP Northern Affairs Shadow Minister Jordan McPhail and First Nations and Métis Relations Shadow Minister Leroy Laliberte on Supports for Hunting and Trapping in Wake of Wildfire Crisis and PAGC's Calls for Action

We are deeply concerned about the impact of the ongoing wildfire crisis in the North and the effect it has had on traditional trapping, hunting, and fishing lands. The Saskatchewan Party government has been alarmingly silent on the supports needed by those who rely heavily on these lands for their food and livelihoods.

The destruction caused by the wildfires this summer has been devastating, with many communities suffering significant losses. The cleanup efforts required are substantial, and those affected are understandably worried about the long-term implications of this disaster. It is unacceptable that they are left to face these challenges without clear direction or assistance from the government.

The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on the Saskatchewan Party to immediately develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to address the rebuilding of the North. This strategy must include support for individuals and communities to restore their lands and resume their traditional practices, which are not only critical for their economic well-being but also for the preservation of cultural heritage and food security.

We stand in solidarity with the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) and their calls for action. Their recent statement highlights the urgent need for the province to work collaboratively with First Nations and Métis communities to ensure that the necessary resources and supports are provided.

We recognize the profound connection that First Nations and Métis people have with the land, and the importance of maintaining these connections in the face of such devastation. The government must act swiftly to address the immediate needs of those affected by the wildfires and commit to a long-term plan that respects the rights and responsibilities outlined in treaties and agreements.

The Saskatchewan NDP is committed to working with all stakeholders to find solutions that support the sustainability of the North and the resilience of its residents. We will continue to advocate for the resources and policies that are essential for the recovery of these vital lands and the people who depend on them.
