The Edmonton area has seen a tragic incident where a 16-year-old teenager lost his life due to an overdose involving a fake Xanax pill containing Isotonitazene, a powerful opioid.

The Alberta RCMP has responded with a province-wide alert regarding these counterfeit pills, which are designed to mimic the appearance of Xanax, a commonly recognized prescription medication used to treat anxiety. The actual substance inside the pill is not Xanax, but rather a dangerous and unregulated opioid that poses a significant risk to those who may unknowingly consume it.

The replica pills are described as grey and rectangular with "ONAX" imprinted on one side and the number "2" on the other. This particular combination of drug classes is highly unusual and alarming, as individuals seeking a sedative effect from Xanax are not prepared for the intense impact of an opioid like Isotonitazene. This drug has only been observed in the Canadian unregulated drug market since 2019, and there is no established medical use or safe dose for humans.

Forensic pharmacologist Richelle Booker emphasized the danger of such substances, stating that there is no way to safely use Isotonitazene and that any amount could be potentially fatal. The RCMP is urging the public to be vigilant and educate themselves and their children about the risks associated with these counterfeit pills. Having a brief conversation about the issue with family members could prevent further tragedies.

If you or someone you know has information regarding the distribution of these fake Xanax pills or other harmful substances, please contact your local law enforcement or the Alberta RCMP. Additionally, if you suspect someone is overdosing, call 911 immediately and administer naloxone if available.
