Premier Smith stated last night that he spent over two hours engaging with a passionate audience in Fort McLeod. As Premier, part of my responsibility is to connect with Albertans and listen to their viewpoints. I am dedicated to this duty in service to our shared province. A special thanks to MLA Chelsea Petrovic for hosting me along with my Ministerial colleagues, Brian Jean, Rebecca Schulz, and RJ Sigurdson. These individuals have a deep commitment to their land, air, and water. They shared their concerns and asked questions regarding Alberta's Coal Modernization Policy. I appreciate the opportunity to address their inquiries and reaffirm that the new coal regulations will ensure:
☑️ No new open-pit mines or mountaintop removal in the Rocky Mountains or Eastern Slopes.
☑️ Any new mining operations will utilize modern techniques to prevent selenium contamination of waterways.
☑️ Existing property rights, leasehold rights, and other land use agreements will be respected, adhering to rigorous environmental standards.
☑️ The development of crucial metallurgical coal for steelmaking, essential for producing the machinery, equipment, and supplies needed globally.
☑️ The protection of our stunning landscapes for future generations.
