Levothyroxine, which is taken by 23 million Americans, may hasten bone loss and increase the risk of osteoporosis, particularly in older persons, according to study from Johns Hopkins. Despite having normal thyroid levels, users reported considerable bone density loss over a six-year period, according to a study of 445 participants, who were on average 73 years old. Researchers caution that 90% of users may not require it, and that it is frequently overprescribed. Ten million Americans suffer from osteoporosis, which causes fractures and early mortality. Patients are advised to periodically check thyroid function and reevaluate their course of medication.
