Today marks World Down Syndrome Day, a significant occasion to enhance awareness, honor the accomplishments and contributions of individuals with Down Syndrome, and advocate for their rights to inclusion and empowerment.

The date, March 21st, symbolizes the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which is the primary cause of Down Syndrome.

On Wednesday, the Governor and Mr. Wilson, serving as Patrons of Down Syndrome NSW, hosted a reception at Government House to commemorate this day.

In her address to the attendees, the Governor remarked: "While Down Syndrome is the most prevalent chromosomal condition in our society, the nearly 300 babies born annually in Australia with Down Syndrome are far from ordinary. Each possesses unique talents, potential, and strengths. They have their own narratives, contributions, and dreams to pursue... However, it is important to acknowledge that many face challenges that most of us do not encounter. We must be candid about this reality. Individuals in our community with Down Syndrome often confront obstacles created by misguided beliefs and outdated stereotypes. This is why visibility and advocacy are crucial."

During the reception, the Governor and Mr. Wilson awarded Champions of Change trophies to representatives from organizations whose generosity has greatly supported Down Syndrome NSW's mission of 'enriching the lives of people with Down Syndrome.' They also presented the 20 Years in Service Award and introduced the latest Ambassador for Down Syndrome NSW, Australian actor Julian Maroun.
