 Albufeira, a well-known Portuguese city, may soon forbid visitors from wearing swimsuits on its streets or impose a steep fine. A popular destination for British vacationers, the beachfront city in the southern Algarve region has updated its code of conduct to specifically forbid persons from being partially or completely nude in public places. According to the updated proposals, anyone wearing Going without a shirt or wearing a bikini outside of the beach might result in a fine of up to €1,500 (£1,250). Albufeira joins a rather long list of European cities, such as Barcelona, Dubrovnik, and Nice, that have such regulations. Albufeira's reputation as a party destination has hurt the city's image, despite its stunning beaches and exciting nightlife. Eight British males were caught on camera dancing in the nude atop a bar in the middle of the day on Rua da Oura, Albufeira's major party strip, last year. Portuguese authorities were able to identify the tourists after the videos went viral. Mayor José Carlos Rolo pledged to take tough measures against "excessive" visitor behaviour after it prompted an emergency meeting with the municipal council, security services, and businesses. To "preserve Albufeira as a multicultural, family-friendly, and safe destination," the "urgent" reform is required. Another local annoyance is the prohibition of public sex acts. The regulations also apply to terraces that are visible from public areas, and business owners who are caught permitting inappropriate activity risk facing steep fines. Although the idea is presently up for public comment, it might be implemented by the summer.
