Alberta is taking a proactive approach to preventing the introduction of invasive mussels into its waterways by implementing mandatory inspections for all incoming watercraft from high-risk areas such as Saskatchewan and Montana starting June 1.

The new measure applies to all types of watercraft, including boats, jet skis, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. The province is currently free of zebra and Quagga mussels, and the government is aiming to maintain this status to protect ecosystems, shorelines, and prevent costly damage to infrastructure. These invasive species are known to cause significant harm to water systems, leading to economic and environmental consequences. The Alberta Invasive Species Council supports the government's actions, emphasizing the importance of early intervention to prevent irreversible damage. Eleven inspection stations will be operational this summer, and watercraft operators will be required to obtain a proof-of-inspection sticker. Failure to comply with the new regulation could result in a substantial fine of $4,200.
