Ghana opens its first gold refinery to gain more value from the resource

Ghana has opened its first gold refinery in a significant step towards capturing more value from its rich natural resources. The refinery, known as the Gold Coast Refinery, is located in Accra and has the capacity to refine up to 400 kilograms of gold daily. This development is part of Ghana's broader strategy to increase local processing and add value to its gold resources, which are a major contributor to the country's economy.

The refinery will allow Ghana to refine its gold domestically rather than exporting raw gold, which typically yields lower profits. By refining gold within the country, Ghana aims to retain a larger share of the value chain, boost local employment, and strengthen the economy.

The establishment of this refinery is also expected to enhance the traceability and ethical sourcing of gold in Ghana, aligning with global standards for responsible gold production. Additionally, it could help Ghana further assert its position as one of the leading gold producers in Africa, alongside South Africa and Sudan.

This initiative is part of Ghana's broader efforts to increase beneficiation in its mining sector, ensuring that the country reaps greater benefits from its natural resources.
