Two men, Darryl Flett, 22, and Curtis Baker Spence, 20, have been charged with aggravated assault, robbery, and failing to comply with a court order in connection with an attack on a Calgary Transit bus driver that left the driver in critical condition.

The incident occurred after the driver did not acknowledge the suspect's request to drive in a direction opposite from the bus's designated route. The driver was able to call for emergency medical assistance using the phone in his work station and has been upgraded to stable condition.

Mike Mahar, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union, expressed concerns over the frequency of such incidents and called for additional safety measures such as external cameras and permanent shields to protect operators. Calgary Transit's director, Sharon Fleming, mentioned that the company is working on installing such safety features as part of their 30-year plan, RouteAhead, but noted that the current budget is tight due to inflation and increasing operational costs.
