EFCC Detains 2 Chinese Nationals and Six Nigerians for Illegal Mining Activities

Operatives from the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have apprehended two Chinese nationals along with six Nigerians for their alleged participation in illegal mining in the Ogere region of Ogun State.

The detained individuals are Zhang Hang Lin and Gao Pei Hai, alongside Matthew Mathias, Oluwaseun Amoo, Wasiu Ademola Alao, Ajibola Nurudeen, Ibrahim Yinusa, and Saidu Shuaibu. They were taken into custody on Friday, May 9, 2025, following a well-coordinated sting operation triggered by credible intelligence and meticulous surveillance. During the arrest, officials seized three trucks filled with sacks containing materials believed to be ground lithium powder, as well as other unidentified minerals. Additional items recovered from the suspects included a Toyota 4Runner SUV, mobile phones, samples of low-grade lithium, an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), ATM cards, the suspects' international passports, four LED flashlights, and various documents. The suspects will face charges in court as soon as the investigation is complete.
