*Fines Totaling £168m*: Three of England's biggest water companies, Thames Water, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water, face fines totaling £168m from the industry regulator Ofwat.

*Reason for Fines*: The fines are due to the companies' failure to manage their wastewater treatment works and networks, resulting in excessive spills from storm overflows ¹.

*Thames Water's Fine*: Thames Water faces the largest fine at £104m, followed by Yorkshire Water at £47m and Northumbrian Water at £17m.

*Regulator's Investigation*: The fines are part of Ofwat's largest ever investigation into water company performance, which uncovered a "catalogue of failure" by the three companies.

*Environmental Impact*: The companies' failure to adequately invest in and maintain their networks led to repeated releases of raw sewage into the country's waterways, causing harm to the environment and customers.

*Public Consultation*: The proposed fines will now go to public consultation.
