Tensions are escalating within the Kebbi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) amidst reports that Governor Nasiru Idris may be considering a defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in advance of the 2027 elections.

A widely circulated report has included Idris among five APC governors reportedly contemplating an alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to mount a challenge against President Bola Tinubu. The state government's prolonged silence on the matter has only intensified speculation. In response to growing concerns, APC Chairman Muhammad Zuru has called on members to maintain their loyalty and refrain from associating with newly emerging political parties.

The strong presence of the PDP in Kebbi and the governor's slim victory in the 2023 elections have heightened fears of a significant political realignment. In the midst of this turmoil, discussions surrounding Attorney General Abubakar Malami as a potential APC candidate for 2027 are gaining momentum as divisions within the party widen.
