"With the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, I express my deepest respect and condolences to the Catholic community in Australia and globally.

"As countless Australian Catholics grieve the loss of a spiritual leader, father, and friend, we are reminded of His Holiness' enduring message of peace, the importance of respecting the rights and dignity of every individual, and the necessity of caring for our shared home, the Earth.

"Pope Francis' visit to our region in September 2024 highlighted his commitment to the global church. During his time in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Singapore, His Holiness inspired communities to engage in respectful dialogue, foster love across differences, and maintain hope for the future.

"On that Apostolic Journey, the Royal Australian Air Force had the privilege of facilitating His Holiness' travel to the remote areas of Papua New Guinea. The members of 37 Squadron, who accompanied His Holiness to Vanimo, felt honored to witness the Holy Father's dedication to embracing and uplifting people worldwide.

"Australia has enjoyed a strong friendship with the Holy See for over 50 years. Throughout this time, we have collaborated to promote and protect our mutual interests in peacekeeping and poverty alleviation.

"Today, as Pope Francis is commemorated in Masses and private prayers throughout Australia and beyond, may the legacy of His Holiness' mission of peace, compassion, and love provide hope and solace for many years to come.

"May he rest in peace."
