On Thursday, Russia's Supreme Court rescinded the T@l!ban's classification as a "terrorist organization," a move intended to foster amicable relations with Afghanistan's current governing body.

The Islamist group took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, coinciding with the withdrawal of American forces that had been supporting the internationally recognized government.

Moscow, which has characterized the U.S. withdrawal as a "failure," has since sought to establish normalized relations with the Taliban authorities, viewing them as a potential economic ally and partner in the fight against terrorism.

"The previously imposed prohibition on the activities of the T@liban, which was listed among organizations recognized as terrorist, has been lifted," stated Supreme Court Judge Oleg Nefedov in a ruling reported by the TASS state news agency.

"This decision takes effect immediately," he added.

Last month, Russia's Prosecutor General requested the court to lift the group's "terrorist" designation, following multiple visits to Russia by senior Taliban officials.

A Taliban delegation participated in Russia's prominent economic forum in Saint Petersburg in both 2022 and 2024, and the group's chief diplomat met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow last October.

While this decision to lift the designation does not equate to formal recognition of the Taliban authorities, who are seeking international legitimacy, it alleviates potential awkwardness for Russian officials engaging with representatives of the militant group at significant events.
