Ksenia Karelina, a dual citizen of the US and Russia, has been freed from a Russian prison as part of a prisoner exchange with the United States.

Karelina was imprisoned for a modest donation of approximately $50 made to a charity supporting Ukraine and was released in exchange for Arthur Petrov, a German-Russian man accused of military espionage. The exchange took place in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, with Karelina's lawyer confirming the news that morning. Karelina, a former ballet dancer, was serving a 12-year prison sentence after being convicted of treason in August 2024 for her humanitarian donation. After moving to Los Angeles, she acquired US citizenship and was arrested in January 2024 upon returning to Russia to visit family. This marks the second US-Russia prisoner swap since Trump took office in January. Trump Credited with the Release: CIA Director John Ratcliffe, present in Abu Dhabi for Karelina's release, stated in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, "Today, President Trump has successfully brought home another wrongfully detained American from Russia. I commend the CIA officers who diligently supported this effort, and we are grateful to the UAE government for facilitating the exchange." US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also confirmed the news, tweeting, "American Ksenia Karelina is on a flight back to the United States. She was wrongfully held by Russia for over a year, and President Trump was instrumental in securing her release." Efforts to Strengthen Relations: These exchanges are being seen as a sign of improving relations between the US and Russia, which have deteriorated significantly since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Communications between the two nations have largely been handled through their respective intelligence agencies. Trump has been vocal about his desire to foster a closer relationship between the US and Russia, and Thursday's swap aligns with his pledge to "end the war in Ukraine." The CIA remarked, "This exchange underscores the necessity of maintaining open lines of communication with Russia despite the significant challenges in our bilateral relationship. While we regret that other Americans remain unjustly detained in Russia, we view this exchange as a positive step and will persist in our efforts for their release." Details of the Prisoner Swap: Ksenia Karelina, a beautician and former ballerina from Beverly Hills, was detained in Yekaterinburg, Russia, early in 2024. According to her boyfriend, she was arrested by Russian authorities during a family visit. A Russian court subsequently convicted Karelina of high treason for allegedly providing funds to the Ukrainian military. Friends and family members stated that Karelina donated $51.80 (€47) to a nonprofit organization aiding civilians affected by the war. She was sentenced to a 12-year term in a Russian penal facility.

The other individual involved in the exchange, Arthur Petrov, was apprehended in Cyprus in 2023 at the request of the US. Authorities allege that Petrov used a Cyprus-based company as a front to acquire sensitive US electronics, intending to send them to Russia. It is claimed he purchased these items under false pretenses, pretending to be a buyer for fire safety systems before transferring them to a military supplier in St. Petersburg.
