The Department of Justice (DOJ), in collaboration with the Bureau of Immigration (BI) and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), has launched an innovative border control system aimed at enhancing national security through the implementation of the Advance Passenger Information (API) System.

The ceremonial launch of the API System was led by Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, along with Undersecretaries Raul T. Vasquez and Jose R. Cadiz, Jr., and BI Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado. They were joined by UN Resident Coordinator Arnaud Peral, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Hae Kyong Yu, and UNOCT Countering Terrorist Travel Section Chief Christine Bradley. This initiative aligns with the UN's 'goTravel' software, designed to support law enforcement by providing comprehensive processing of passenger data, thereby improving capabilities in national border management. Additionally, this system will facilitate collaboration between local and international authorities, equipping them with tools to detect and thwart the travel of terrorists and other serious criminals while ensuring the protection of individuals' data and privacy. "Securing our borders extends beyond merely intercepting threats; it's about fostering a system of trust and cooperation that enables us to work seamlessly with our domestic and international partners... Threats transcend national borders, and our countermeasures must do the same," stated ES Bersamin. "The benefits of this initiative are evident: enhanced border control, improved intelligence sharing, and a more proactive approach to national security. With this system in place, we reduce the risk of threats bypassing our immigration protocols, prevent travel document fraud, strengthen risk assessments, and ensure that our security agencies are equipped to act swiftly and efficiently," part of Usec. Vasquez's remarks quoted Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" C. Remulla. With the software's launch, the Philippines becomes the 7th Member State and the first in the ASEAN region to implement and activate 'goTravel', marking a significant achievement in national security. #DOJPH #BagongPilipinas
